DJ Questions

dj: must ask questions

Interviewing potential wedding vendors can seem like a long process. How do you know what questions to ask? What should you even be looking for in a vendor? That’s where we come in!

In this Springs Blog, we wanted to break down the questions you should be asking while interviewing potential DJs + answers that you should be looking for! If you ask these questions, you’re sure to find the perfect DJ for your big day!

1. How long have you been doing this professionally? Where can I view your reviews or references?

Asking questions about their experience ensures that you are going to get a DJ who is proven to get the party started!

2. Have you DJ’d a wedding at my venue before?

This is a great question to ask your potential DJs because believe it or not, the layout of your venue is crucial to having a successful DJ set up. Your DJ will need to have enough space for his equipment, access to outlets or extension cords, and to know how the sound will carry in a specific space. That’s a huge benefit to hiring The Springs DJ Service! They are very familiar with our venues and know how to set up so you have the best sound possible during your event.

3. What is included with your pricing? Do you have different packages?

Each DJ service will have a different pricing and package structure. Here’s what you can expect from The Springs DJ Service:

“Our pricing is designed to provide you with a seamless and unforgettable experience on
your big day. We understand the importance of both the ceremony and reception, and we’ve got you
covered from start to finish. Our knowledgeable and professional DJ services are committed to
shaping your wedding day into the best day ever. Our packages include, ceremony coverage, reception entertainment, MC services, state-of-the-art equipment, and planning + consultations. These components make up a variety of packages to cater to your specific needs and preferences when it comes to your event.”

4. What additional services do you offer? (lighting + uplighting, photo booth, emcee, slideshow, a gobo light, etc.)

Many DJ/entertainment services will have a variety of specialty add-ons that are not included in their initial package. These might include a Gobo light, venue uplighting, photo booth services or any specialized music genres or a themed playlist.

5. Do you provide a written contract? Do you require a deposit? If so, how much is it? What is your cancellation policy?

These are important questions to ask every vendor that you interview. These questions can save you lots of money in the long run, just by being informed on the company’s policy + contract details.

6. How many hours of service do you provide? When will you arrive/depart?

Everybody knows that a DJ is there to bring the VIBES on wedding day, so you should be making sure that your DJ will be there all day. The Springs DJ Service for example, provides an all-day service, arriving 2 hours prior to the ceremony start time and staying until the venue kicks them out! If you require any additional hours, be sure to arrange that with your DJ and venue team prior to wedding day.

7. Do you provide sound for the ceremony + reception or the reception only?

Having your DJ run sound for ceremony and reception is a big convenience when it comes to wedding day! Unless you want specialty music, like a string quartet for your ceremony, we totally recommend having your DJ run sound for both parts of your wedding day!  A cool thing about The Springs DJ Service; they do both ceremony and reception with extra microphones included, free of charge!

8. Will you provide your own sound equipment (speakers, microphones, etc.)? If not, what will you need?

It’s very important that you have a clear understanding of what all equipment your DJ has vs. what they will need. Many DJs rent their equipment which could be an additional charge to you. That’s another cool thing about an in-house DJ like The Springs DJ; all of the necessary equipment is already at the venue. From speakers to microphones, from tables to cables, they’ve got everything ready to ensure a smooth evening!

9. How much space will you need? Do you provide your own table/linen? Do you need a chair? Do you need access to outlets? Do you need wifi?

Due to the equipment that your DJ uses, you need to ensure that you are alloting enough space for them in your floor plan. Remember to take any additional services or specialty add-ons into consideration as well. You want to ensure there is easy access for guests to use your photo booth, or that any specialty lighting won’t be covered by something else. The Springs DJ set up usually needs about a 7×7 area, but it can vary based on where you’d like your DJ to be placed within the venue.

10. Will you be our DJ or will you be sending someone else? If it will be someone else, are we able to speak with them throughout the planning process?

If you are working with a DJ company, like The Springs DJ, this is a necessary question to ask because it’s important that you get to know the DJ that will be responsible for your day. With TSDJ – there is a team of incredibly diverse and experienced Djs who are ready to play a part in your big day. You can set up a consultation with your assigned DJ and can reach out as often as you’d like during the planning process!

11. How do you engage guests and keep the energy up throughout the evening? What do you do if no one is on the dance floor?

If you’re a couple that LOVES to dance, we know that this is one of the most important string of questions you’ll have for your DJ. After all, no one dreams of a dead dance floor at their wedding… That’s why you need to look for a DJ who talks about bringing the party to LIFE! Your DJ should have high energy, crowd-pleasing tunes, interactive moments and seamless transitions that will keep guests on their feet. But it goes even beyond that. You need a DJ who is able to read the room. If the dance floor needs a boost, you need a DJ that is quick to adapt by switching the tune or encouraging crowd participation. Rest assured, if you book The Springs DJ Service, you’ll have all of this and more!

12. How do you handle guest song requests?

Whether or not you want your guests to be able to request songs is completely up to you! Be sure that you are booking a DJ that is going to respect your wishes when it comes to guest’s song requests.

13. How extensive is your music catalog? Can you play any song I want? Can you make recommendations?

When booking a DJ, you need to ensure that they have a music catalog that aligns with what you envision for your day. For example, The Springs DJ Service takes pride in their extensive music knowledge, curated through diverse wedding experiences and overall love for music! If you need any, they are happy to provide recommendations and can help guide you into making music decisions for your special day!

14. Can we submit a “do not play” list?

If you feel like you’ve heard the cha cha slide at too many weddings, a “do not play” list is a feature you may want to take advantage of! Make sure that your DJ service will allow you to send in a “do not play” list so you can be sure that it’s your day, your way!

15. What information do you need from me before wedding day? How will I submit this?

Every DJ will have a different system when it comes to getting your musical details ready for the big day. Some may want you to reach out via email or online portal, some may just want a link to your playlist. Asking this question up front, ensures you ample time to gather this information to ensure no special requests get left behind.

The Springs DJ Service has their couples complete a DJ worksheet about 1 month before your big day. They will also need your official timeline and any special song requests that may not be found in music databases.

16. What will you be wearing at our wedding? Will you color coordinate with our wedding colors?

If you have a specific vision for your day, the best way to achieve it is through great communication. Let you DJ know if you have any special attire requests! The Springs DJs are always dressed in a classy manner, to set a high standard for your event, and are open to outfit color coordination upon your request.

17. What happens if you unexpectedly are unavailable to be at our wedding?

This is a question that you should be asking every wedding vendor. Knowing each vendor’s backup plan ensures that you are going to have an amazing day, no matter if the unexpected takes place. Another great thing about The Springs DJ Service, they are a team! So even though unexpected situations are rare, there’s a backup DJ ready to step in on short notice!

18. How much time do you need to setup + breakdown?

Like any wedding vendor, setup and breakdown time will depend on the package that you book. Make sure that you are choosing a DJ/Photo Booth company that is going to work with the flow of your day. Remember to account for a soundcheck as part of setup, so everything is ensured to be running perfectly by the time guests arrive!

19. Will you act as the emcee & make all announcements throughout the evening?

One thing you need to know when you are planning event flow; guests need to be told what’s going on! Be it announcements throughout the night, playing the wedding shoe game, or explaining what an anniversary dance is – you need someone who is comfortable with a mic to emcee your evening!
