One of the biggest wedding trends we’ve seen popping up lately for couples has been wedding invitation suites that are boujie and unique. According to Brides.com, these professional invitation suites can cost an average of $5,000-$8,000. While they are a beautiful way to showcase your personality as a couple, this price tag is too high for many couples, and understandably so!
When it comes to your wedding planning process, invitations can be an easy DIY, just very time-consuming. Creating your own invitations can feel like a daunting task to overcome, but with a little patience, grace, and some scrapbooking tools, you can create some beautiful, affordable DIY wedding invitations in no time!
Design Them Yourself
One big way to save some money is to design your wedding invitation suite yourself. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be super creative to create something super cute for your wedding invitations! Find some inspiration and wedding invitations that you like and this will help you in your design process. You can have classic, elegant, modern, boho, and even humorous wedding invitations – it’s all about what you like and what fits the theme of your wedding the most!
Log on to a design site like Canva and they already have free templates there where you can just add in your information and print! If you don’t love any of the options that are free on these design sites, you can always purchase a digital template on Etsy. Most of these templates won’t be more than a few dollars, and they are super easy to download and use. And if you REALLY aren’t the digital design type, websites like Zazzle, Minted, or even The Knot, have some cute invitations that are more affordable than hiring someone to design them.
RSVP Online
The biggest tip we can tell you when it comes to DIY-ing your wedding invitation suite is to RSVP ONLINE. Having your guests submit their RSVPs directly through your wedding website is easy, free and it will save you lots of time!
Having an online RSVP option is so cost-effective. Not only are you saving on the cost of the actual printed cards, but you also won’t have to buy envelopes for them, address them, or stamp them. For every 100 invites, this can save you about $200!
Wedding professionals and engaged couples also don’t mention the hassle that RSVPs can be. Many of your guests (especially those who have not yet been married) don’t realize the importance of a timely RSVP if they choose to RSVP at all. This becomes increasingly more difficult when it requires them to do physical tasks like filling out the card and putting it in the mail. Doing this online also eliminates the issue of reply cards getting lost in the mail! A quick and easy QR code that takes guests directly to your website is the simplest way to go.
Strategize When You Will Buy
Odds are, you know all the details that need to be included in your wedding invitations well in advance. Use this to your advantage! Watch out for sales at local print shops or online such as Labor Day or Fourth of July sales. Even if your stationery is sitting in a drawer for a while, this is a great way to save some money in the long run!
Buy an Address Embosser
If you are DIY-ing your wedding invitation suites, an embosser for your return addresses will be your best friend. You can get these on amazon customized with your return address for as cheap as $30. Other stores, print shops, and Etsy shops would also have them as well! By purchasing one, you are saving yourself hours of writing the same address over and over again or saving on the cost of the materials you would use to create return addresses. The true BONUS of an embosser: you can re-use this embosser after the wedding is over! You can get all of the class for a fraction of the cost.
Price Check Items
Did you know that you can find almost any size, style, and color envelope on amazon? When it comes to envelopes, lots of print shops have limited color options and will charge you a higher price. Although this isn’t always the case; it really depends on your overall vision for your invitations. Make sure that you are weighing all of your options and price-checking similar items at various stores or websites to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.
Skip the Extra(s)
Truthfully, all you need in an invitation suite is a save the date (which is becoming increasingly more optional), envelopes, an invitation, a details card (may or may not be necessary depending on your wedding), and postage. By skipping the envelope liners, wax seals, rsvp cards, themed stamps, or any other “extras” you can save some big bucks!
Now… we mentioned that sending save the dates can be optional. While the sentiment behind a save-the-date is still a great idea, many people just don’t want to spend the money and that’s okay! If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to a physical save-the-date, you can send a virtual one, make a Facebook page and invite your guests, or send an email to everyone on your guest list! This is definitely a less traditional approach, but it will help save you money in a pinch!
Plan Ahead
Printing your own invitations, envelope liners, or addresses will almost always be the more affordable option. But it will be a time-consuming craft. Extra hands will always be helpful! Once all the pieces are ready, you can invite some bridesmaids, or close friends and family over for an invitation-packing party! Be sure to plan ahead when it comes to ordering your supplies, give yourself (or your party) packaging time, and make sure that you are still putting them in the mail 6-8 weeks in advance of your wedding.
