Top 5 tips for a sustainable wedding

It’s Earth Day and we know that one of the hottest wedding trends is making weddings more sustainable and eco-friendly! Let’s face it… hosting a big event like a wedding can be a bit wasteful sometimes. Here are our top 5 tips to help make your wedding a more sustainable event 🌏

Rethink Your Printed Products

The most obvious culprit when it comes to a sustainable wedding is all the paper you use throughout the process. There are quite a few ways to help cut down on paper waste. First and probably the most obvious, do virtual save the dates and invitations! This option has already been a trend in recent years, and it is amazing for the environment. However, we know that some of us like to kick it old school and want a physical invitation.

So, what can we do to make those more sustainable? You can try a mix of virtual and physical. For example, do a virtual save the date, and on your invitations have a link to your wedding website as opposed to sending a physical RSVP card. This takes 3 pieces of paper down to 1 and not to mention this is a SUPER budget-friendly option! You are saving less on envelopes, printing, design, and postage! You can also opt to print these materials on recycled paper or cardstock, and you can encourage the guests to recycle them as well after your event!

Don’t litter during your grand exit

While sparklers are a crowd favorite and an amazing photo opportunity, they are not the most eco-friendly option out there. Flower petals and leaves will be the best of both worlds! An amazing photo-op without any of the pollution or toxins that might be in sparklers!

Rent when you can

Renting for your wedding is always a great sustainable option! You know that you’ll be getting convenient and high-quality goods that won’t be going to waste at the end of the evening! An easy rental would be renting suits for the wedding party. This is also a super budget-friendly option! While it can be a bit more expensive to rent linen napkins and real table settings, the environment will thank you when you don’t have 200+ napkins and plates thrown away at the end of the evening.

Reuse or Resale!

On the flip side, if you do decide to purchase, check out places like antique stores or Goodwill to see what you can find that has already been gently used. You never know what you might find; even when it comes to clothing! Some bridal shops will even sell second-hand wedding dresses or off-the-rack samples!

Whether you bought it used or new, either way, let’s face it, a lot of the items you purchase for your wedding, you’ll never use again. Rather than throwing away or just holding on to all of those gently used items, you can sell them at The Springs Wedding Garage Sales! Here we allow previous brides and grooms to come and sell items from their wedding that they will no longer need! It’s a great way to get necessities or décor on the cheaper end, without buying brand new.

Talk to your caterer about saving leftovers

One of the most wasteful parts of any wedding or event is going to be your food. It’s just the truth of it all, especially when you have a buffet-style dinner. To help cut down on food waste, you can opt for a plated dinner so that less food will be wasted overall. However, we know this is not always the most budget-friendly option. If you are set on hosting a dinner buffet, try talking with your caterer about saving the leftovers! Rather than all that food going to waste, it can be given to the family to take home, taken to a homeless shelter, or to a nursing home for others to enjoy!
